Capital actions

Did the company do what it said it would?

Japanese companies announce buybacks, dividend policies, disposals and return targets. This tracks what happened next: whether the promise was specific, whether the steps can be traced, whether the economics were ever explained, and whether the company later reported back against its own target.

What this measures, and what it does not

It measures the quality of the explanation, not the quality of the decision. An action scored 5 is one a reader can follow from promise to outcome. Whether it was a good use of the money is a different question, and not one this answers.

There is no language test here: a company is not marked down for disclosing in Japanese only. That is what the disclosure index measures, separately. How a score is built →

Scores are provisional. The search for a company’s material actions is a selection rather than a complete sweep, so these figures must not be compared across companies as a ranking. A company gets a score out of 100 only once 3 or more of its actions are reviewed; until then the list shows how many were reviewed, and the company page gives each action’s ratings.
